Like with many cities of the central Great Plains states, Tulsa weather is best known for its tornadoes. Lying in the heart of tornado alley, it is not uncommon for severe thunderstorms to cause large hail and damaging tornadoes.
In April of 2006, a brief touchdown by a weak tornado occurred in northeast Tulsa. The weak twister caused some minor damage at the Tulsa International Airport and an adjacent hotel. The storm served as a reminder how unpredictable Tulsa weather can be.
